Herein, based on the conjugation of the geopolitical, civilizational, and institutional scientific methods, an integral approach has been proposed allowing one to overcome the limitations of these methods on their own in their analysis of social systems, explain both the general and specific features of these systems, to determine conditions for the formation of complex meso- and mega-societies taking into account the influence of a set of factors (economic, political, socio-cultural). The term “location-development” coined by the Russian geopolitical school is used as the main category of the method, the content of which is supplemented with new essential characteristics, namely, the existence of a society in the space it occupies, regulated by institutions developed by this society. Thus, the focus of the integral approach is the analysis of institutions (development carriers) regulating the existence of a social system and its interconnected and interdependent economic, political, and socio-cultural subsystems in the space occupied by it. It is shown that the essential characteristics of the location-development are determined by the type of institutions (redistributive or market) dominating in the institutional environment. In accordance with this, two main types of location-development are distinguished: the X-type with the dominance of redistributive institutions and the Y-type with the dominance of market institutions.
In general, a location-development is not associated with a separated specific ethnic group or state. A necessary condition for the formation of such a meso- or megalocation-development is institutional affi nity (the same type of dominant institutions) in the components that form it.
It is shown that location-developments of different types are “constructed” from the same elements of redistributive and market institutions, but in different combinations, thus establishing a likeness of a periodic table. Different combinations are necessary for the stable development of the society under the conditions determined by the space occupied. The uniqueness of the resulting combination determines the originality of the society, at the same time, the presence of similarity in the location-development construction determines susceptibility to external influences and, consequently, the ability to change, the existence of universal values and ideals, and universal principles of interstate relations. The concept of “X-Y type location-development” is compatible with the recognition, on the one hand, of the multiplicity of forms of human history and life, and on the other, with the idea of the existence of unity in the principles of constructing social systems.
