The subject matter of the present article consists of the logical contradictions between the Christian doctrine of marriage and the relevant heresies of Marcion and Tertullian. The methods of investigation include linguistic (specifically semantic) analysis of ambiguous natural language, formal-logical analysis of the corresponding arguments and texts, and the construction and investigation of discrete mathematical models of the axiological dimension of the problem. For mathematical modeling of this dimension, the author employs two-valued Boolean algebra of formal ethics, of natural jurisprudence, and of natural theology (as formal axiology). A precise definition of the notion of a “two-valued algebraic system” is provided. As an important supplement to the well-studied formal-logical semantics of natural language, this article systematically investigates the less thoroughly explored formal-axiological semantics of natural language, in which the semantic meanings of words and phrases are understood as moral-legal-value functions and their compositions. The formal-axiological semantic meanings of the phrases “ideal (eternal) marriage of y with x” and “(temporal) terrestrial (lay) marriage of (whom) x with (whom) y” (i.e., the corresponding Boolean moral-legal-value functions) are precisely defined by means of relevant moral-legal-value tables. Owing to these precise tabular definitions, the article arrives at the conclusion that the aforementioned two-place Boolean moral-legal-value functions are mutually dual to one another. According to the definition of duality, a function that is dual to a function which is itself dual to a function F is equivalent to F. This yields the possibility of making a discovery of considerable importance for terrestrial beings: namely, that happy terrestrial marriages (notwithstanding their finitude) are proper (true) marriages; they are formally-axiologically equivalent to the infinite ideal marriages “established in heaven.” This conclusion is favorable to terrestrial beings, but it appears gravely paradoxical if the significant formal-logical distinction between statements of being and statements of value is not systematically taken into account. In order to effectively neutralize this paradoxicality, the article offers a precise formulation of a logical-methodological rule A&B, which constitutes a formal-axiological analogue of “Hume’s guillotine.” The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that for the first time in world literature, the relation between dissoluble terrestrial marriages of lay people and the corresponding indissoluble celestial marriages (“established in heaven”) is precisely defined as the mutual mathematical duality of the corresponding Boolean moral-value-functions in the two-valued algebra of formal ethics. Furthermore, for the first time in world literature, it is demonstrated that, according to this algebra, in a very special particular case of existential importance for humankind, happy terrestrial marriages (in spite of their finitude) are proper (true) marriages, being formally-axiologically equivalent to the ideal (infinite) celestial marriages “established in heaven.” The author declares no conflicts of interests.
